Work experience for students in Years 10-13 (Age 14-18)

We offer a limited amount of work experience placements to students Years 10-13 who live and attend school/college within the city of Sheffield. Currently we are restricted by the precautions in place due to COVID-19 but we hope to resume work experience as soon as we can.

We want to ensure our students have an insight into the vast array of jobs available but there are some areas with restrictions to student access as stated below.

  • Years 10 & 11 are not allowed in any clinical area
  • Years 12 & 13 are allowed in clinical areas under supervision<
  • Areas restricted to all students aged years 10-13 are Theatres, Intensive Care, areas where patient consent cannot be gained and areas where students may be put at risk of exposure to Hepatitis B or risk of TB infection
  • Areas where patient consent cannot be obtained

Application process

You will need to have gained some prior knowledge in your area of interest by attending one of the relevant virtual events below, before your application for face-to-face work experience is accepted. You will need to complete the on-line application form; this will automatically go to your school’s careers representative for approval before being submitted to us. Please look at the work experience student guide prior to applying. This sets out requirements and timelines for work experience. You will need to know some of the requirements and dates before applying.

If you are not in Years 10-13 and are enquiring about placements at the Trust, please make contact with the relevant department manager. Please note that any placements are unpaid and will be at the manager's discretion as to whether the request can be accommodated.

All our apprentices are paid the national apprenticeship rate and will divide their time between the workplace and college as per the schedule for each apprenticeship.

Years 10 to 13 Young Person’s Work Experience

Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust offers a limited amount of placements to students Years 10-13 who live and attend school/college within the city of Sheffield. All placements are unpaid and in an observation capacity and will take place over a period of 5 days.

Applications must be submitted through the work experience representative of the school/college to which the student is affiliated and will not be accepted directly from students.
Application Timetable

Request to Start Work Experience Placement in Months Student Applications to be Submitted to Sheffield Teaching Hospitals in:
January, February, March or April October
May, June, July or August February
September, October, November or December June

Students may apply three times within the year as shown in the Table below. Applications must be submitted in the relevant month for the period in which the student would like to carry out their work experience.
